Sarajevo Receives a Mural Dedicated to Social Inclusion, Gender Equality, and Climate Resilience – Project Led by BHAAAS Member Prof. Dr. Emira Švraka

A mural has recently been completed on the facade of the Jezero Secondary Medical School in Sarajevo, using a powerful visual expression to promote the values of social inclusion, gender equality, resilience to climate change, and social responsibility. The mural was created as part of the regional project “Strengthening the Resilience of Women with Disabilities to the Impact of Climate Change in the Western Balkans Region.” What gives this project particular significance is the fact that its implementation in Bosnia and Herzegovina is led by the Federation of Associations of Persons with Cerebral Palsy of the Federation of BiH, headed by Dr. Emira Švraka, Director of the Federation, long-time member of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS), and Chair of the Fifth International Symposium in Mental Health of Children and Adolescents at this year’s 17th BHAAAS Days.

Academician Prof. Dr. Zijad Pašić, Member of BHAAAS, Has Passed Away

We are saddened to share that Academician Prof. Dr. Zijad Pašić, a long-standing member of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS), passed away this morning in Tuzla at the age of 82.

As part of the 17th Days of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS), the workshop “Obesity in Clinical Practice: From BMI to an Individualized Therapeutic Approach” will be held within the First International Symposium on Endocrinology and Diabetology.

The Bosnian-Herzegovinian Film Festival (BHFF) in New York has announced the guests of its 22nd edition, including Aleksandar Hemon, an award-winning Bosnian-American writer, professor of creative writing at Princeton University, and a member of BHAAAS.

Professor Zlatan Akšamija Visits Sarajevo and Holds Lecture at Faculty of Electrical Engineering Sarajevo

As part of the Ministry for Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina Knowledge Transfer Program, Prof. Dr. Zlatan Akšamija visited Sarajevo, where he delivered a lecture and engaged with students and faculty.

As part of the “Knowledge Transfer of Experts from the Diaspora to Bosnia and Herzegovina” program, implemented by the Ministry for Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina through the Diaspora Sector, Professor Ajla Akšamija visited the Faculty of Architecture, University of Sarajevo, from March 9–13, 2026.

As part of the “Knowledge Transfer of Experts from the Diaspora to Bosnia and Herzegovina” program, implemented by the Ministry for Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina in partnership with BHAAAS, Professor Zlatan Akšamija delivered a lecture at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics - University of Sarajevo (Physics department).

Dr. Mahira Tanović Appointed President of the National Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Mahira Tanović, MD, FACS, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon with more than twenty years of professional experience in New York. She is a member and former President of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS) and has been appointed President of the National Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a professional organization operating at the national level.

Dr. Sanda Vujnić: Why early reaction in sepsis is crucial

Our member, Dr. Sanda Vujnić, prepared an article on the occasion of September 13, World Sepsis Day, with the aim of raising public awareness about this serious and often overlooked health threat. BHAAAS members and the Knowledge for Health platform actively follow current topics, strive to be available to the media and the public, and contribute with their expertise to improving citizens’ awareness. Carolyn Dorfman Dance presents Prologue: A Dance of Hope - The Story of Max Heller, a powerful fusion of dance, music, and theater. Featuring electroacoustic compositions by Sarajevo-born composer Svjetlana Bukvich and Bosnian singer Davor Ebner, this project is a cultural bridge between BiH and its US diaspora. Premiering in January 2025, it honors Heller’s legacy as a Holocaust survivor, immigrant, and trailblazing mayor who fought segregation in Greenville, South Carolina.
